ABOUT

Cryptology and Security Research Unit (CSRU) is a part of the Computer and Communication Sciences Division (CCSD) of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. It is an integral component of R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security, a national hub for cryptographic requirements, cutting-edge research activities and indigenous capacity building in all relevant fields of study. The Unit aims at the promotion of interdisciplinary research in Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics towards furtherance of teaching, research as well as training and development in Cryptology and Cyber Security.

Major activities of CSRU include teaching, training and research in Cryptology and Security. The Unit promotes sustained collaboration in focused research areas, and serves as a meeting point for eminent scholars. It also conducts internship and training programs targeted to produce a critical mass of experts to cater to the national and international requirements in this niche area.

Research

The principles of research at CSRU are creativity, complementarity, flexibility, and collaboration. Although the research program of the Unit can be viewed as a single entity, it is conceptually divided into several broad sub-programs. The modular nature of this structure directs efforts to the most promising lines of research. The Unit is organized around small research groups, each of which represents an area of specialization relevant to solving the scientific and technical problems associated with Cryptology and Cyber Security.

The research programs focus on the theoretical as well as the applied aspect of Cryptology and Security research. The research areas of the Unit include, but are not restricted to, the following:

  • Computational Algebra and Number Theory
  • Discrete Mathematics and Coding Theory
  • Foundations of Cryptology
  • Symmetric Key Cryptology
  • Public Key Cryptology
  • Hash Codes and Authentication
  • Cryptographic Protocols
  • Cryptographic Hardware

  • Network Security
  • Cyber Security of Critical Infrastructure
  • Cryptography for Clouds and Grids
  • Cryptography for Cyber Physical Systems
  • Fault Tolerance of Complex Networks
  • Quantum Computation and Cryptology
  • Digital Rights Management
  • Financial Cryptology

Teaching

CSRU has a strong teaching component as a route to disseminate specialized knowledge in the niche domain of Cryptology and Security. The faculty members at CSRU take part in the regular academic program at ISI Kolkata, and teaches courses at various levels of degree programs offered by the Institute. Please visit the individual faculty webpages to know more about the teaching activities at the Unit. In addition, the Unit offers several short-term courses and workshops, as a part of the teaching and training program at R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security.

Thesis Supervision

The faculty members of CSRU can supervise Masters students of any discipline of the Institute in the domain of Cryptology and Security. If you are interested in the Masters programs at ISI, please refer to http://www.isical.ac.in/~admission for details regarding the admission process. Interested students, who are already registered Masters students at the Institute, should contact individual faculty members directly for masters thesis supervision in their respective areas of interest.

The faculty members of CSRU can supervise Doctoral students at the Institute towards a full-time Ph.D program in Cryptology and Security. The admission to the doctoral program is through the usual process of JRF entrance examination and interview process of the Institute. Interested candidates may refer to http://www.isical.ac.in/~admission for details regarding the admission process. Interested students, who are already JRF/SRF at the Institute, should contact individual faculty members directly for doctoral thesis supervision in their respective areas of interest.

Training Programs

Certificate Course

Under the regular activities of R C Bose Centre, the Unit offers a short-term (one semester) certificate course on the basics of Cryptology and Security for Government officers and scientists, who work in these areas. To earn the certificate, the participants of this course need to complete due coursework and/or work towards a major project and/or appear for end-of-term examinations (specific details and format may vary). The candidates are nominated from their respective organizations. Kindly contact the R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security for further details.

Short-term Course

The Unit also offers short-term courses on specialized topics related to Cryptology and Security to Government as well as private organizations, on need basis. These courses are generally offered in the form of three-day intensive workshops or week-long lecture series, either within the Institute campus or in the campus of the respective organizations. Kindly contact the R C Bose Centre for Cryptology and Security for further details. You may also contact individual faculty members if you are interested in short-term courses in their specific domains of interest.

Summer Internship

Every summer, under the regular activities of R C Bose Centre, the Unit offers a dedicated research internship program to undergraduate and post-graduate students from premier institutions of the country. Interested students may contact the individual faculty members to work under their respective guidance, or apply for the common Summer Internship Program in Cryptology.
