Physics and Earth Sciences Division
The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a unique institution devoted to the research, teaching and application of statistics, natural sciences and social sciences. The founder of the Institute, Professor P.C. Mahalanobis, decided to diversify its activities in a way that quantitative data on various sciences - social, biological, physical etc. could be generated within the Institute.
It was also foreseen that the diversification would result in a symbiotic relationship between statistics and other academic disciplines. With this in mind, many units in other disciplines were set up. These included Economics, Sociology, Physics, Chemistry, Electronics, Crop Science, Anthropometry and Human Genetics, Biometry, Biochemistry, Geology, etc.
In close collaboration with the statisticians of the Institute, scientists belonging to these units started conducting basic and applied research. Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, believed that statisticians and scientists working in other branches of science in close proximity will greatly contribute to the development of statistical methods of data analysis.
He received strong support from Sir Ronald Fisher and Prof. J.B.S. Haldane, both of whom were closely associated with the Institute. Accordingly several science departments in different discipline established and started to flourish.
There are three units under this division

Opening for Visiting Scientist Position(s) in PAMU
The Physics and Applied Mathematics Unit (PAMU) of the Indian Statistical Institute invites applications for the position(s) of Visiting Scientist from bright candidates who have recently obtained a PhD degree in Physics / Applied Mathematics. Those who have submitted their PhD theses and are awaiting the degree may also apply.
This is a rolling advertisement against which applications will be reviewed periodically in a financial year. The application deadline for the next round is 20 June 2026.
The candidate’s field of research must have an overlap with any of the thrust areas of research in PAMU, namely, Condensed Matter Physics, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, Quantum Gravity, Black Holes, Fluid Dynamics, Nonlinear Dynamics, High Energy Physics, and Quantum Information. Collaboration with one or more faculty members working in PAMU is required. For more details, please visit Faculty Member page of PAMU.
Selected candidate(s) will be initially appointed for a period of six months, which may be terminated earlier/extended further for a maximum period of another six months, subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
Applications should be sent as a single PDF file to the email address pamuapplication@gmail.com with the subject line “Application for Visiting Scientist Position”.
Application must contain:
A research proposal (500 words), preferably prepared in collaboration with a faculty member of PAMU, a curriculum vitae which must include date of birth, academic qualifications, professional experience (if any), a list of publications, and a copy of the appropriate certificate for a candidate belonging to the SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/EWS category. A forwarding note from the concerned faculty member is necessary. Applicant’s age should not exceed 35 years as of 20 June 2026, with usual relaxation for reserved categories.
